Vacancy: Little Lights Leader

The church of St Giles Durham is seeking to appoint a person of Christian faith with a love of people and a desire to see God’s kingdom grow to be one of a team of two leaders of our Little Lights Parent and Toddler Group.

The post-holder will enjoy working with a wide range of people and have some prior experience of working with babies and toddlers in either a professional or personal setting. They will be a person of integrity, able to work well as part of a team, and will always uphold the ethos of St Giles Church. They will be willing to undertake any training and development as required, and will show an appropriate amount of flexibility as the role may require.

Background Information

Little Lights Parent and Toddler Group (LL) meets twice weekly in term-time from around 9.30am-11.30am on Tuesday and Thursday in the Parish Centre in St Giles Church.

Currently around 10 children and parents attend the sessions. LL sessions usually include plenty of time for play and a chance for parents/carers to get to know one another. Families gather for stories and songs and a simple snack is served at the end of the session.

For the past six years, there have been two Little Lights leaders who work together as a team. The key values of St Giles’ and so of LLs are welcome, safety, flourishing and inclusion, all within the ethos of invitation rather than prescription. We value the children as part of God’s good creation and hope to see them develop their own spirituality, along with their parents/carers.

The Little Lights Leaders have a key role as a link between the LL members and the wider life of St Giles. We incorporate a variety of stories and songs including some from the Bible. We are keen that this overtly Christian part of Little Lights is developed, and we hope that the Leaders will be able to promote and develop the distinctively Christian elements of LL once again.

The LL Leaders are responsible for the organisation and running of the LL Group, under the supervision of the LL Management Committee and through them to the Parochial Church Council of St Giles Church, Durham. We are rebuilding a team of volunteers who support the running of LLs. Because it is a parent and toddler group, parents/carers are in attendance all the time and are primarily responsible for the safety and well-being of their children but the LL Leaders are required to maintain exceptional standards of safeguarding, health and safety, hygiene and behaviour.

Place of Work: The post holder will work at St Giles Church, Durham.

Hours: The post is offered on 3hours x 2 days per week during term time, plus 1 hrs per week preparation time either at home or in the parish office.

Salary: The hourly rate is £11 per hour, paid monthly in arrears in equal instalments.

Holiday: The employee is entitled to 5 days paid holiday per annum.
